SPEED NETWORKING TIPS
These tips are intended to help you prepare for Speed Networking after you have registered for the event.
The System:
6:00 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Registration
6:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Speed Networking Kickoff
6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Speed Networking
Note: You will have five minutes with each person. You will have
two and a half minutes to describe yourself and a need that you have and
two and a half minutes to listen to your partner.
8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Reconnecting time
Note: meet those you missed or extend other conversations
9:00 p.m. Close
Suggestions for Preparing for Networking:
Below are some networking pointers/questions that will assist you in the event you get stumped on what to talk about.
• Think about how you want to describe yourself. You could talk about what you do, what you want to do, or describe your goals for 2007.
• Think about one or two needs that you have.
Examples:
You need contacts within an organization
You are wanting to generate publicity for an event
You are wanting contacts within an industry you hope to get a job in
• Make it easy for someone to help you. The more concise you are in your descriptions of yourself and your goals…
the better your odds for success.
• Come with the goal of helping at least one person. You will meet several people so don’t feel compelled to help everyone you connect with. Challenge yourself to help at least one person that you meet. If everyone does this… the impact of this event and following events in Des Moines could be huge.
• Be prepared to encounter others in your occupation/profession. The event is designed to be all-inclusive to all industries.
What to Bring:
• Bring plenty of business cards. If you don’t have business cards, 3x5 note cards with your contact info (name, e-mail, phone, occupation, etc.) will work just fine.
• Bring a pen to take notes on the back of business cards you gather in order to remember certain details.
• The event itself is free, but bring money if you want refreshments or snacks.
What to Wear:
• Dress as casual or as formal as you wish.
